Why do I get tired if I do "Zero Work"?

If you hold a heavy weight still, Physics says Work = 0 (Distance = 0). However, your body is doing Physiological Work. Your muscle fibers are constantly twitching and burning ATP to maintain tension against gravity. Physics measures energy transferred to the *object*, not the energy lost by your *body*.

What is the formula for Work?

How much work is 1 Joule?

What is negative work?

Negative work happens when the force acts in the opposite direction of motion. For example, friction does negative work on a sliding car, slowing it down.

What is a Foot-Pound (ft-lb)?

A US engineering unit. It's the work done by a force of 1 pound moving an object 1 foot. 1 ft-lb ≈ 1.356 Joules.

Does holding a heavy object count as Work?

No. Since the displacement (d) is zero, the Work (W) is zero. You are expending biological energy to keep your muscles tense, but doing no mechanical work.

How does angle affect Work?

Only the force component in the direction of motion counts. If you pull a suitcase at an angle, only the horizontal force does work. The vertical force just lifts it slightly.
