Master the art of sharing. Visualize grouping, understand remainders, and memorize division facts.

Equal Sharing

Division helps share things equally.
Sharing 13 items into 4 groups gives 3 per group, with 1 left over.

Sharing Fairly

Division is one of the most useful math skills in daily life. Whether you're slicing a pizza for friends, splitting a bill, or distributing tasks, you are using division.

The Concept

Dividend ÷ Divisor = Quotient. Think of it as "Total Item" ÷ "Number of Baskets" = "Items in each Basket".

Leftovers

Real life isn't always perfect. If you have 10 cookies and 3 friends, everyone gets 3 cookies, and there is 1 left over. That's the Remainder.

Reverse Math

To check your division, just multiply! If 20 ÷ 4 = 5, then 5 × 4 must equal 20. If it doesn't, check your math again.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Division?

Division is the process of splitting a number into equal parts. It is the opposite of multiplication.

What are the three parts of division?
  1. Dividend (The amount you want to divide).
  2. Divisor (The number you divide by).
  3. Quotient (The answer).
What is a Remainder?

Sometimes numbers don't divide evenly. The remainder is what is left over after you make as many full groups as possible. For example, 7 ÷ 2 = 3 with a Remainder of 1.

Why can't you divide by zero?

It's undefined. Division asks 'how many times does X fit into Y?'. Asking 'how many times does 0 fit into 5?' has no logical answer because no matter how many zeros you add, you never reach 5.

How are Division and Multiplication related?

They are inverse operations. If 3 × 4 = 12, then 12 ÷ 4 = 3 and 12 ÷ 3 = 4.

What is a 'Factor'?

A factor is a number that divides another number completely without leaving a remainder. 3 is a factor of 12.

How do I use the Division Table?

Our table lists 'facts' grouped by divisor. Look at the 'Divide by 5' card to see all multiples of 5 divided by 5.

What is Long Division?

Long division is a method used for dividing large numbers by breaking the problem into smaller, manageable steps.

Does order matter in division?

Yes! Division is not commutative. 10 ÷ 2 is 5, but 2 ÷ 10 is 0.2. This is different from multiplication where 2 × 5 is the same as 5 × 2.

What is the symbol for division?

The obelus (÷) is common in elementary math. In algebra and computers, the forward slash (/) is used.
