Dehydration Checker?
Why Hydration Matters
Water is the most important nutrient for your pet. It regulates body temperature, lubricates joints, aids digestion, and cushions the brain. A loss of just 10% of body fluid can be fatal for a dog or cat.
Our calculator goes beyond simple weight-based math. We account for weather conditions, activity levels, and diet (wet vs. dry food) to give you a precise daily target.
Immediate Danger Signs
If you notice these signs, your pet needs water immediately. If they are vomiting or won't drink, go to the vet.
5 Tips to Get Them to Drink More
Keep it Fresh
Pets hate slime. Wash the bowl with hot soapy water daily. Bacteria changes the taste.
Ice Cubes
Most dogs love crunching on ice. It helps hydrate them while being a fun treat on hot days.
Add Flavor
Add a splash of low-sodium chicken broth or tuna juice (for cats) to their water bowl.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I perform the 'Skin Tenting' test?
Gently lift the loose skin on the back of your pet's neck or between their shoulder blades. In a well-hydrated pet, the skin should snap back into place instantly. If it takes more than a second or two to return to normal (remains 'tented'), your pet is likely significantly dehydrated.
What are the signs of dehydration in dogs?
Early signs include dry/sticky gums (instead of wet/slippery), thick saliva, and lethargy. More severe signs include sunken eyes, loss of appetite, and the skin losing elasticity (tenting). If your dog is vomiting or has diarrhea, dehydration can happen very fast.
Do nursing (lactating) dogs need more water?
Yes! Producing milk requires a massive amount of water. A nursing mother may need 2-3 times her normal water intake. Always ensure she has unlimited access to fresh water, as dehydration will quickly dry up her milk supply and harm the puppies.
Is tap water safe for pets?
Generally, yes. If the tap water is safe for you to drink, it is safe for your pet. However, if you have very hard water, some studies suggest a link to urinary crystals in cats. Filtered water is always a great option. Avoid distilled water for long-term use as it lacks essential minerals.
Should I give my dehydrated dog Pedialyte?
For mild cases, unflavored Pedialyte can be safe in small amounts, but water is usually best. For severe dehydration (vomiting/not eating), you should go to the vet. Do not try to force-feed large amounts of water as it can cause vomiting, making dehydration worse.
Why is water important for digestion?
Water helps break down food and allows nutrients to be absorbed. It also lubricates the digestive tract (preventing constipation). Dogs on strictly dry kibble diets need significantly more water to process their food compared to dogs on raw or canned diets.
How does hot weather affect water needs?
Dogs cannot sweat (except through paw pads). They cool down by panting, which evaporates moisture from their tongue and lungs. On hot days, this rapid evaporation depletes their water stores quickly, increasing their requirement by 30-50% or more.
Can a dog drink too much water?
Yes, this is called 'Water Intoxication' (Hyponatremia), though it's rare. It usually happens when dogs swallow huge amounts of water while swimming or playing with a hose. Symptoms include bloating, vomiting, glazed eyes, and loss of coordination. It is a medical emergency.
How much water does a puppy need?
Puppies generally need about half a cup of water every two hours. They are more prone to dehydration than adults because of their small size and high energy. Closely monitor them during house training—water intake drives potty breaks!
Does wet food count as water?
Absolutely. Canned wet food is about 75-80% water. If your pet eats practically 100% wet food, you might notice they rarely drink from the bowl. This is normal and healthy, as they are 'eating' their water just like wild ancestors.
My cat never drinks water. Is that bad?
Cats have a low thirst drive. In the wild, they got moisture from prey. If your cat eats dry food and doesn't drink, they are at risk for kidney disease and UTIs. Try a pet water fountain (cats prefer moving water) or switch to wet food to increase hydration.
What temperature should the water be?
Cool or room temperature is best. Ice water is generally safe and can be a treat on hot days, but don't give huge amounts of ice water to an overheated dog too fast, as it might cause stomach spasms (though the 'bloat from ice water' myth is largely debunked).
