What is Remove Extra Spaces?
Invisible characters can be the most annoying part of text editing. You copy a paragraph from a PDF, and suddenly it's riddled with double spaces, weird gaps, and trailing whitespace. The Remove Extra Spaces tool is your instant fix. It intelligently scans your text to collapse multiple consecutive spaces into distinct single spaces, normalizing your document's rhythm without deleting the line breaks or structure you actually want to keep. If you need to remove blank lines specifically, use the Remove Empty Lines tool.

Why You Need This Tool
PDF & Justified Text
We've all been there: copying text from a justified PDF column results in words separated by 3 or 4 spaces. This tool fixes that artifact instantly, restoring natural reading flow.
Code & Data Prep
Developers know that stray whitespace can break strings or bloat file sizes. Clean your SQL queries, JSON objects, or standard code comments in one click. For deeper cleaning, try the Text Cleaner.
Editorial Polish
Standardize your manuscript or blog post. Turn "Sentence. Sentence" (two spaces) into "Sentence. Sentence" (one space) to meet modern web standards or fix paragraph gaps.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does remove extra spaces do?
The tool removes excess whitespace from your text. In 'Multiple to Single' mode (default), it replaces 2 or more consecutive spaces with a single space, perfect for fixing double spacing errors from PDFs or typing mistakes. It also offers modes to remove ALL spaces, or just leading/trailing spaces.
What are the different removal modes?
There are 5 removal modes: (1) Multiple to Single - collapses consecutive spaces to one space, (2) Remove All Spaces - deletes every space character, (3) Leading Spaces - removes spaces at the start of lines, (4) Trailing Spaces - removes spaces at the end of lines, (5) Both Edges - trims spaces from both start and end only.
Does it preserve my line breaks?
Yes! By default, the 'Preserve Line Breaks' option is enabled, which maintains your original paragraph structure and newlines while only cleaning up the spaces. Uncheck this option if you want to process text as a single block.
Can it remove duplicate lines?
Yes! Enable the 'Remove Duplicate Lines' option to automatically keep only unique lines in your text. This is useful for cleaning up lists or removing repeated content while cleaning spaces.
How do I remove all spaces completely?
Select the 'Remove All Spaces' mode from the Removal Mode section. This will delete every space character in your text, useful for creating compact identifiers, URLs, or removing spacing from code.
Why does PDF text have so many spaces?
Justified text in PDFs uses variable spacing to align text edges. When you copy such text, these extra spaces come along, creating 'w i d e' spacing between words. Our tool instantly normalizes this back to single spaces.
Can I see before and after changes?
Yes! Click the 'Compare' button to enable comparison mode, which displays your original text with extra spaces on the left and the cleaned version on the right side-by-side, making it easy tonverify the changes.
Is my data safe and private?
Yes, 100% safe. This tool runs entirely in your web browser using client-side JavaScript. Nothing you type or paste is ever sent to our servers or stored anywhere. It works completely offline after the page loads.
Can it sort and organize my lines while cleaning?
Yes! Use the 'Sort Lines' option to alphabetically sort your lines (A-Z or Z-A) while removing extra spaces. You can also apply case transformations (UPPERCASE, lowercase, Title Case) simultaneously.
What's the difference between trim edges and removal modes?
Removal modes control how spaces within your text are handled (e.g., collapse multiple to single). 'Trim Edges' is an additional option that removes spaces from the very beginning and end of each line, regardless of which removal mode you choose.
