Create Subscript & Chemical Formulas

The Write Subscript Text tool is designed for students, scientists, and math enthusiasts. It allows you to easily generate Subscript characters (like the ₂ in H₂O) for use in plain text environments. We also include Superscript and Small Caps to give you a complete set of tiny text options.

Key Features

Subscript

The star of the show. Perfect for chemical formulas and math indices.

Superscript

Also included! Great for exponents, footnotes, and ordinals.

Batch Processing

Convert long lists of variables or compounds line-by-line.

Why use Subscripts?

Chemical Equations

Writing formulas in chat is a pain. Use our tool to write H₂SO₄ + 2NaOH → Na₂SO₄ + 2H₂O properly.

Variables & Indices

Define multiple variables clearly in your notes or messages, like x₁, x₂, x₃ etc.

How to Use

  1. Input: Type the numbers or letters you want to convert.
  2. Select: Look at the Subscript card for below-line text.
  3. Copy: Click the copy button and paste it into your document or chat.
  4. Tip: Combining normal text with these characters lets you write full equations.

Live Example

Input
C6H12O6
Subscript Output
C₆H₁₂O₆

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Subscript text?

Subscript is a character style that appears slightly smaller and below the baseline of normal text. It is most commonly used in chemical formulas (like the '2' in H₂O) and mathematical expressions (like x₁).

Why is the Subscript alphabet incomplete?

Unlike Superscript, which has more coverage, the Unicode standard unfortunately does not include a full set of lowercase subscript letters. It was designed mainly for math and phonetics. Common letters like 'c', 'd', 'f', 'g', 'b' are missing or look different.

How do I write chemical formulas?

Simply type the numbers you need (e.g., '2', '3', '4') into the tool, and it will generate the subscript versions (₂, ₃, ₄). You can then copy and paste these into your text to write proper formulas like H₂O or CH₄.

Can I also create Superscript here?

Yes! While this tool focuses on Subscript, we have also included Superscript (above line) and Small Caps styles for your convenience, so you don't have to switch pages.

Is this tool free to use?

Yes, it is 100% free with no limits. You can generate as much text as you need for homework, research papers, or social media.

Does it work in Microsoft Word?

Yes, but Word has its own built-in subscript formatting (Ctrl+=). This tool is more useful for places where that formatting isn't available, like email subject lines, Facebook posts, or plain text editors.

Can I convert a list of formulas?

Absolutely. Enable Batch Mode to paste a list of items (one per line). The tool will process each line individually so you can convert multiple formulas or variables at once.

What are Small Caps used for?

Small Caps are uppercase letters that are the same height as lowercase letters. They are used in typography for acronyms (like NASA) to prevent them from dominating the text, or for elegant headers.

Can I copy-paste this to Instagram?

Yes! Subscript and Superscript characters are standard Unicode, so they work perfectly in Instagram bios, captions, and comments.

How do I clear the text?

Just click the Clear button (refresh icon) at the top of the input box to instantly remove all text and start over.
